Title of the project 1: Pan-India characterization of the Plasmodium field isolates available in the Malaria Parasite Repository for drug resistance genes and other molecular markers
Summary:
India is a major hot-spot for the malaria infections where Plasmodium falciparum is found in equal proportions to P. vivax and the malaria parasite bank at NIMR has >1000 field isolates of P. falciparum and P. vivax collected from endemic and non-endemic regions from over 30 years. These isolates are not characterized at molecular level and which is needed currently. With this basis this project is undertaken to study the genomic characteristics of pan-India Plasmodium isolates spread over three decades. The generated data will be a huge resource for the Indian research community which will also be used to initiate whole-genome sequencing efforts for capacity building within NIMR for genomic surveillance.

Title of the project 2 (LDI) : A study of low-density malaria parasite infection in the community and its transmission potential in North and South districts in Goa
