Title of the project: Strengthening of Malaria Slide Bank and External quality Assurance Programme for microscopy
Summary:
Microscopy is the most widely used technique for the diagnosis of malaria, since the inception of a structured malaria control programme in the country. It continues to be the “Gold Standard” for laboratory diagnosis, though it does have some limitations. The most important being the subjectivity in the interpretation of the result by the microscopist. There is a well-established programme for cross-checking of the blood smears under National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, wherein all the positive and 5% negative blood smears from government health facilities are cross-checked for parasite species at higher designated facilities.
Malaria slide bank set up at ICMR-NIMR will support the national quality assurance programme, and in assessing and improving the competence and performance of malaria microscopists. The slide bank also aims to support malaria quality assurance programs with standard sets of slide panels for the improvement of microscopists in laboratory settings. It will support activities pertaining to basic training, refresher training for malaria microscopy, and National competency assessment of malaria microscopists (NCAMM).
