Title of the project: 28S Ribosomal RNA Capture Assay for the Sensitive Detection of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax
Summary:
The main focus of the study is to develop our Proof of Concept of a capture assay using 28S ribosomal RNA as a target for the detection of malarial parasites, Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. We have been able to demonstrate high sensitivity at the level of genus-specific detection, and wish to develop it further to a species-specific level for P. falciparum & P. vivax. Our goals are to:
1. Establish the micro-titer based 28S rRNA capture assay using chemiluminescent probes for efficient and sensitive detection of parasite infection.
2. Provide the basis for a dipstick based visible detection procedure utilizing 28S rRNA.
3. Provide for the basis of a microfluidic platform based on 28S ribosomal RNA capture and detection
